Luca Gnecchi Ruscone founded his brand L.G.R which are handmade in Italy, and inspired by Africa. In 2005 Luca visited one of the optical stores that his grandfather had owned in Asmara, Eritrea. It was there he discovered a box of colonial period sunglasses, which had been imported from Italy 50 years earlier. Luca was fascinated by the elegant design of the frames, and he brought the pieces back to Italy. Word spread of Luca’s wares, and instantly requests poured in for these unique sunglasses. He tracked down the manufacturers and reopened the same laboratory, which had closed in 1968. He then began a small production of the authentic frames, respecting the traditional artisanal methods of the past and using only the highest quality materials.
L.G.R eyewear is entirely handmade in Italy by artisanal families, who build each frame from start to finish using traditional methods of production in order to deliver a timeless product. Each frame represents the Italian values and heritage through the hard work of real people. L.G.R produces and uses its own tempered mineral glass lenses made out of mineral crystal. They offer 100% UV protection, and 6 layers of scratch resistant and impact resistant multicoating.
Today, only the finest Italian eyewear producers use cellulose acetate for their frames. The molecules are flexible, unlike the molecules of a synthetic plastic which are brittle. This inherent flexibility is the greatest advantage of using cellulose acetate for eyewear and it is exactly this property that allows the frames to adapt to the wearer’s face over time. In addition, cellulose acetate frames can bend to adapt to shape without heating. It is hypoallergenic and bacteria resistant which means that frames made from this material are less likely to cause skin irritation.
Eyewear Youwear carries both the optical and sunglass L.G.R ranges so you too can take home a little piece of Italian art, inspired by Africa…
